    You skipped a crucial step: attaching the borders. You only mentioned that you want the borders to overlap equally at the ends. What is the trick to ensuring the ends overlap equally? I imagine that you determine half-way point of the border in terms of total length and the total width of the top, side, or bottom of the quilt (depending on which one you're working on), then match the half-way points to ensure the border is centered on the quilt. Where do you begin sewing the borders on? Do you start at the edge of the quilt or from the "stop" point we created? I understand that the video is focused on the mitering, but if you don't position the border correctly or know how to attach it, you won't get the corners.

    I am a professional seamstress. I sew everything. I use a Singer heavy duty mechanical, and seemingly cannot wear it out beyond repair. The bobbin case needs replaced every 6 months because I sew so much denim, but I do memory quilts, wedding dresses, prom dresses, patch jeans, etc. On this machine. It only cost $ 200. I have the same machine at work. They both average about 5 hrs a day. 500 is SCARY to people just starting a hobby.

      I think that since a cutting mat isn't "cushy", it could keep your machine in place a bit more than just placing it on the table, but it probably won't do much to tone down the noise. Thanks for watching!

    I love this! It is so much better for me because as a beginning quilter my blocks, more often than not, are crooked or off and I don't have enough wiggle room to square them up properly. Does this formula work for all edges? Edit: Oh my! I created a block this evening and it looked so good! Better than any block I ever made- professional, even! Coming across your video feels like a game changer for me! Thank you!

    I got chisel-tipped ones from our local art store (because that's what they had). The tip is 1/2" wide and is perfect for covering the seam. I was using my spray mister before but felt like I was wasting product and not getting exactly where I wanted it. Now with the pen, it is perfect. Thanks so much for this tip! The ones I bought also open by twisting the opposite direction so thanks too for pointing that out in a comment!

    • @joyfulandmerryquilting
      @joyfulandmerryquilting 6 дней назад

      You're welcome. From what I read, they twist open by holding the in the direction they are used. So, when you hold them with the tip down, they twist open as we would any other jar or container. Who knew??? :-) Thanks so much for watching!

    I also intentionally use the wrong side of the fabric. Sometimes, the right side is too bright for the design that I want.

    • @joyfulandmerryquilting
      @joyfulandmerryquilting 6 дней назад

      You are certainly welcome to use the wrong side or the right side of your fabric - I know many quilters who take advantage of both sides depending on their project. The purpose of my video was to help others identify the right side of a fabric where sides are difficult to distinguish by simply looking at it. I hope it was helpful to you.

    Will you be doing a separate video on this subject for solids & batiks? It can be tough to figure out when I'm working with scraps. Much easier when it's a larger piece. Great tip about the pin holes - that was new to me. Thanks! 🧵

      @joyfulandmerryquilting 6 дней назад

      At the beginning of the video I did talk about solids and batiks. There's really not a lot of additional information I could offer. For the most part, they look similar if not identical on the front and back. Thanks for watching!

    I have intentionally used the wrong side of fabric on some quilt tops because I liked the effect better. Also, for some of the fabrics you've shown, if you have to look that hard to determine right vs wrong side, the average person will probably never notice. Interesting video, though. I always learn something.

    There is a time when I intentionally use the wrong side of fabric. When I make quilt labels, I like to use a scrap of fabric from the quilt just completed. But, many times, the fabric is too busy to be used as a label. I found that using the WRONG side of the fabric for the label works really well. The "faded" image from the right side comes through like a water mark on fancy stationary. The quilt label stays in character with the quilt, and the information is easier to read.

If it's a really large piece of fabric and I only need a small portion of it, I cut off a little more than I need and press it with the pressing solution. If I am going to cut and use most of the piece, I will press the entire piece with pressing solution and then cut.
